Car Clicking But Won’t Start? Battery, Starter or Alternator – How to Tell
You turn the key or press the start button and instead of the engine firing up you hear click-click-click – or just one dull click. It is one of the most common calls we get at Jampare, and the good news is that in most cases a simple car battery jump start gets you moving again. Here is how to tell what the clicking actually means.
Rapid clicking: almost always a weak or flat battery
A fast, machine-gun clicking sound comes from the starter solenoid. The battery has enough power to engage the solenoid, but not enough to turn the starter motor, so the solenoid keeps dropping out and re-engaging. Other clues that point to the battery:
- Dashboard lights are dim or flicker when you try to start.
- The interior light fades when you turn the key.
- The car was parked for several days, or a light or the radio was left on.
- The battery is more than two or three years old – heat in Sri Lanka shortens battery life (see how long a car battery lasts in Sri Lanka).
What to do: stop trying to start the car – every attempt drains what is left. A jump start will normally get the engine running, and a battery test will tell you whether the battery can be recharged or needs replacing.
One single click, then nothing
If you hear one loud click and the dashboard lights stay bright, the battery may be fine. The problem is more likely:
- Loose or corroded battery terminals – a white or green crust can block current even from a good battery.
- A worn starter motor or solenoid – sometimes the starter has a “dead spot”.
- A poor earth (ground) connection between the engine and the body.
A jump start may still help if the battery is borderline, but if the battery tests healthy, the starter or wiring needs a mechanic’s attention.
No click, no lights
If nothing happens at all – no dashboard lights, no click, central locking doesn’t work – the battery is completely flat or disconnected. Check that the terminals are tight. A completely discharged battery can usually be jump started, although a battery that has been flat for weeks may not recover (read can a completely dead battery be jump started?).
Lights work, engine cranks normally, but won’t fire
If the engine turns over at normal speed but doesn’t start, the battery is doing its job. The problem is likely fuel, ignition or the immobiliser. Make sure an automatic is in P or N, that you are pressing the brake (or clutch) firmly, and that the smart key battery isn’t dead.
What about the alternator?
If your car starts after a jump start but dies again after a short drive, or the battery warning light comes on while driving, the alternator may not be charging. A healthy charging system shows roughly 13.7–14.7 volts at the battery with the engine running. Our technicians check this with a tester after every jump start, so you know whether the real problem is the battery or the alternator.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my car click but not start?
Rapid clicking usually means the battery is too weak to turn the starter motor. A single click with bright dashboard lights points more towards the terminals, starter motor or wiring.
Will a jump start fix a clicking car?
If the clicking is caused by a weak or flat battery – the most common reason – a jump start will usually get the engine running. The battery should then be tested to see if it needs replacing.
Can I drive after a jump start?
Yes. Drive for at least 30 minutes so the alternator can recharge the battery, and avoid switching the engine off straight away. If the car won’t start again later, the battery or alternator needs checking.

Yes. Jampare provides a 24/7 jump start service across Colombo and the suburbs – call 076 609 6969 at any hour.
