Why a hybrid car won’t start
The 12V auxiliary battery powers the car’s computers, locks and relays that “wake up” the hybrid system. If it is weak, you may see:
- The car does not go into READY mode
- Dashboard lights flicker or stay off
- Smart key or central locking stops working
- Warning lights appear and then the system shuts down
Common causes
- Leaving the car unused for several days or weeks
- Leaving lights, the AC or accessories on with the car not in READY
- Dash cams or alarms drawing power while parked
- An old 12V battery (often 3+ years)

Can you jump start a hybrid car?
Yes – but it must be done correctly. In many hybrids the 12V battery is not in the engine bay (it may be in the boot or under a seat), and some models have a dedicated jump terminal in the engine-bay fuse box. Connecting to the wrong point, reversing polarity, or using a donor car that causes voltage spikes can damage sensitive electronics.
Important: a hybrid should never be used to jump start another (non-hybrid) car unless the manufacturer allows it – its 12V system isn’t designed for that load.
